What’s that Tree? Saturday, June 6, 9:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. Wise Nature Center If you missed this popular program last time it was offered, here’s your chance to participate. How can you tell a hard maple from a soft one? Are popple, poplar, and aspen the same tree? Is there a difference between a red pine and a Norway pine? A Beaver Creek Reserve naturalist will answer these and other tree questions as you hike the Reserve's trails to look at the unique leaf, twig, and bark characteristics of tree species found on the Reserve and learn some easy ways to remember how to identify them. A simple key to tree identification and ID tips will be provided for participants to take home! Full payment required at registration until June 2. Friends $ 5 Adult/$2 Child Nonmembers $7 Adult/$3 Child Easy Oval Twill Basket Monday, June 8. 5:30-9:30 p.m. Wise Nature Center This wooden bottom 8” by 12” oval basket with a decorative wrought iron handle is woven with a continuous twill weave. It’s a very decorative basket by itself or can be filled with a floral arrangement to celebrate summer. This is an advanced beginner project. Registration and full payment required by May 22 $34 Friends $39 Nonmembers Nature Nuts/Sprouts/Earth Detectives Monday-Friday, June 15 – 19, 9:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. Beaver Creek Reserve Children ages 5-11 love to “go wild naturally” Beaver Creek Reserve camps. The Nature Nuts/Sprouts/Earth Detective programs encourage kids to discover nature through sensory activities. Nature Nuts is an introductory program for ages 5 and 6; Sprouts is a more challenging program for ages 7 and 8. Earth Detectives is for children ages 9 to 11. Whether they are panning for gold or hunting for frogs, Earth Detectives will enjoy getting their feet muddy as they investigate the forest, prairie, stream and pond habitats of the Reserve. Friends $40 Nonmembers $45 Build Your Own Leopold Bench Saturday, June 20, 9:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. These comfortable, wooden four-foot benches were designed and made popular by noted Wisconsin conservationist Aldo Leopold. Build a bench (or the smaller version “Lil’ Leopold” for your favorite young person) to grace your patio or solitary spot during this workshop with Terry Valen and Larry Bennett. Both are available in untreated or treated (arsenic-free) lumber. Bench will be made of treated lumber unless specified otherwise. Class size is limited so call early to register. Friends $ $40 Full Size/ $25 Lil’ Leopold Nonmembers $45 Full Size/$30 Lil’ Leopold All About Butterflies Saturday, June 20, 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. As the days get warmer, we see more butterflies in our gardens and along the roadsides. Sherry Sprague, BCR Butterfly House volunteer, will cover topics that include the life cycle of a butterfly, how to protect them from predators and what happens to butterflies in the winter months. Participants will also tour the Reserve’s caterpillar lab and Butterfly House. Another great family event! Full payment required at registration until June 17. Wise Nature Center Monday, July 6, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Boy and girls age 10-12 year old, are you ready for some fun and adventure? During this one-day camp we'll explore the world of trees and look at how Wisconsin's forests are managed. We'll dig into tree identification, learn about different types of forests, make and use our own forest measurement tools, go on a Champion Tree hunt and mark them using GPS units. What to bring: Kids will need to pack a lunch with a drink, insect repellent and the camper should come dressed for being outside. Morning and afternoon snack will be provided. Friends: $30 Nonmembers $35 NEW! Spelunkers Anyone! Wise Nature Center Tuesday, July 7, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Girls and boys aged 10-12 years old are encouraged to come along and enjoy the interesting, mysterious, and seldom visited world of caves. We'll take a trip to Crystal Cave in Spring Valley and enjoy our own-guided trip through the cave and learn about the interesting geology that made the cave possible. We may also be exploring a new section of cave - lit only by our headlamps! On our return, we'll stop at the Eau Claire River, near the site of an old gold mine and do some panning for gold!! It's a day of fun and exploration for all! What to bring: A lunch with a drink, insect repellent and the camper should come dressed for being outside. A lightweight coat is recommended for the cave tour. Morning and afternoon snack will be provided. Friends: $30 Nonmembers $35 NEW! What's In The Water! Wise Nature Center Wednesday, July 8, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. This one-day camp geared for 10-12 years old nature enthusiasts will explore another universe right here on earth! We'll dive into the mysterious underwater realm of aquatic insects, look at some beasts that could star in their own science fiction movie and learn about the seldom seen (microscopic) life inhabiting our local streams and ponds. Prepare for a day of water exploration full of wonder and fun! What to bring: A lunch with a drink, insect repellent and campers should come dressed for being outside. Morning and afternoon snack will be provided. Friends: $30 Nonmembers $35 NEW! Bog Gone Crazy! Wise Nature Center Thursday, July 9 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Take an amazing field trip with us to the Chippewa County Forest and explore the world of bogs! This one-day camp is geared for 10-12 years olds in mind. Bogs are fascinating plant communities occupying a unique niche in our northern forests. They are home to interesting plants and animals found nowhere else! We'll find tamarack trees, pitcher plants, sundews, and other bog-specific plants. Discover how they survive in such a strange environment. A trip to a bog is one that will never be forgotten! If we have extra time we'll hike a short section of the Ice Age Trail winding through the hills, lakes and ferns of the beautiful Chippewa county forest. Nature Girls Summer Camp Monday – Thursday, July 20-23, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Beaver Creek Reserve Hey, are you a girl aged 10 to 12 years? Come join us for a fun-filled week at Beaver Creek. This week-long adventure camp for girls is designed to sample lots of outdoor activities. Details are being worked out but activities that campers might participate in include but are not limited to archery, river exploration, fishing, fire building, taking part in an official lake study, compass and GPS reading, hiking, journaling, exploring different habitats, bird watching, star gazing and building bird or bat houses. The week will culminate with an overnight tent camp-out on Thursday night with pick up at 9 a.m. on Friday morning. Full payment required at registration until June 1. Friends $120 Nonmembers $135 Basket Workshop Monday, July 20, 5:30-9:30 p.m. Wise Nature Center This basket class will be like having Christmas in July. I will be bringing a nice variety of basket kits that will be both holiday themed and others that are perfect for gift giving. Cost of the kits are $15 to $25. You will choose the kit you want to make that evening — just like the Christmas workshop. Registration and full payment required by July 8. $11 Friends $16 Nonmembers “Wonders of Butterflies” Camp for Kids Monday-Friday, August 3-7, 1–3:30 p.m. Beaver Creek Reserve Learn about the wonderful world of butterflies and flowers this summer at the Reserve. Campers (ages 8 – 11) will identify native Wisconsin butterflies and experience first hand the butterflies’ life cycle as they raise their very own caterpillar. Campers will release newly emerged butterflies into the Reserve’s Butterfly House. In addition, this “hands on” day camp will be filled with crafting butterfly art projects, playing butterfly games and creating their own butterfly journal. Register today! Astronomy Camp Monday, August 17, Registration at 6 p.m. Wednesday, August 19, checkout at 4 p.m. Hobbs Observatory Are you curious about the night skies and what astronomy is all about? Then this three-day and two-night camp is for you. This new BCR offering is geared for any 12-14 year old who is curious about our celestial skies. This camp will feature presentations on various topics in astronomy and night observations using the Reserve’s telescopes, weather permitting. Topics include the bright stars and constellations, galaxies, nebulae, the solar system and the future of the universe. There will also be non-astronomical daytime camp activities offered as well. Campers should bring a sleeping bag and gear for two nights and two days of fun at the Reserve. Tuesday and Wednesday meals will be provided and daily snacks will be included. Friends $140 Nonmembers $160 Catch All Basket Monday, August 24, 5:30-9:30 p.m. Wise Nature Center This long oblong wooden base basket with a push in wooden handle has many uses. Possible uses are a mail basket, a napkin basket, or just as the name implies—a catch all basket. This is an advanced beginner basket.
