Take advantage of the many opportunities throughout the year to connect with nature at Beaver Creek Reserve. Enjoy hands-on nature classes, special events, and presentations about the many facets of our environment and how to take care of our fragile planet. Cancellations require a 48-hour notice prior to the class date to receive a full refund, less a 10 percent administrate fee per program.

Gentle Yoga

Treat yourself to yoga classes at the Reserve. Give this gentle yet fruitful beginning yoga class a try.This class will emphasize beginning poses, core stability exercises, breathing technique and relaxation.
Whether it is your first experience with yoga or you have some prior yoga knowledge, this class aims to establish a foundation in yoga poses, reduce your stress and prepare you for multi-level classes.

Embroidered Basket - Afternoon Session

Have you fallen into a slump and need to get back into shape? Perhaps you want to take your fitness to a new and higher level. This program offers something for everyone. Certified Personal Trainer and BCR employee Jeard Polden is leading an eight-week program to help you achieve your fitness goals.
Classes will be a mix of circuit training, cardio and plyometric work. If you are looking to achieve your best physical self, sign up today. If your schedule does not allow you to participate weekly, there is drop-in rate of $16 per session.

Mid-Winter Candlelight Snowshoe Hike - Rescheduled - First Shift

Candles will light your way as you travel by snowshoes along the tranquil trails at Beaver Creek. There will be two shifts of snowshoe rentals available. Special snowshoe rental rates apply: $2 for Friends members and $4 for nonmembers. Refreshments and a warm fire will be available after the hike.

Photoshop Presentation with Steve Bye

After shutting down his wet darkroom years ago, Steve's interest in photography was rekindled when the first photo inkjet printers became available. Though their quality at the time was not very good, digital photography using inkjet printers seemed worth investigating.
Now, fifteen years later, Steve is an Adobe Certified Instructor of Photoshop. Steve's strength as a teacher is in explaining difficult concepts in easily understandable ways, a skill learned while at Hewlett-Packard as a trainer, engineer and R&D project manager. Learn the ins and outs of Photoshop at this one-day workshop.
Fees include program and lunch. Participants are asked to bring a Thumb Drive to the program. All workshop mateirals will be transferred to your portable drive at class.

Multi-level Yoga

Yoga at he Reserve is expanding! Try a morning class and start your day with movement and purpose.
This multi-leveled class invites each practitioner to work at his or her own pace, allows gentle exploration of each pose and gives guidance toward expanding one's abilities. All levels can enjoy the benefits of yoga when broken down into steps, breaths and attention. Some time will be spent each class on basic and continuing yoga poses, core strength, breathing technique and relaxation.

Mat Cutting 101 - Saturday Morning Session

Bluebird Program

Join a staff naturalist to learn how to attract bluebirds to your yard. The slide program and discussion will provide information on the natural history, behavior and habitat requirements of bluebirds, as well as tips on building, placing and monitoring bluebird houses.

Adopt-a-Bucket - Scouts & Youth Groups

Join us for the first tapping of the season! We will kick off the maple syrup season with the Reserve's annual Adopt-A-Bucket program.
Scout troops, and youth groups are welcome to decorate a bucket with their favorite design to be hung in the Reserve's sugar bush. Decorators will have their picture taken with their bucket(s) before heading to the sugar bush to meet the sapmeister. In the sugar bush you will assist in tapping a maple tree and hang your bucket to catch sap.Upon returning to the Nature Center you will receive sweet reward of Mother Nature, a maple syrup sundae. All this in addition to an eight ounce jar of maple syrup to take home.
Registration Note: There is a limit of five participants per bucket. Groups with more than five in their party will need to purchase buckets according to group size.

Owl Prowl

Join a staff naturalist for a hootin' good time. The evening will begin with a short hike as we listen and hoot for owls in the neighborhood. Then we will move inside to discover some of the unique traits of the owl family. Guest appearance by BCR's non-releasable owl is expected.
This program is appropriate for adults and upper elementary school age children. Dress appropriately for the weather.

Bee School - Learn the Art of Bee Keeping

If you have heard about the pollinator shortage and want to make a difference, then become a backyard beekeeper.
This informative class teaches you the basics to get started. Learn beekeeping from a former professor who also caught the first swarm of African "killer bees" in the state of Arizona.
Bring a sack lunch and wear a hat, long-sleeved shirt and long pants.

Maple Syrup Sunday

Bring the family to explore the tradition of maple sugaring with a guided tour of the sugar bush.
Learn about which trees to tap and how it is done, from tapping the trees to boiling the sap into syrup. Finish with a taste of fresh maple syrup over ice cream. Yummy!

Gone Batty!

Bats are probably one of the most misunderstood but at the same time beneficial mammals in the state. Come learn about the only Wisconsin mammal that can truly fly and why you should want them as neighbors. After the program you will have an opportunity to build your own bat house (additional fee of $12) to take home with you.

Gentle Yoga

Whether it is your first experience with yoga or you have prior yoga knowledge, this class will establish a foundation of yoga in a natural setting at Beaver Creek Reserve. Reduce your stress, gain strength, increase flexibility and center your attention.
The hour-long sessions will include instruction in how to do poses, breathing technique and relaxation. Dress in comfortable clothing without buttons, zippers or snaps. If you have a mat, blanket that folds well, block or strap, please bring them. We will supply as many of the aforementioned props as possible.
If your schedule does not allow you to participate regularly, there is a drop-in fee of $12.

Timberdoodle Tumble

Join a Reserve naturalist to enjoy the spectacular courtship performance of the American woodcock. After a short presentation at the Nature Center, we will visit nearby singing grounds to observe the bird who, in Aldo Leopold's words, "flutters skyward in a series of wide spirals, emitting a musical twitter...then, without warning, tumbles like a crippled plane, giving voice in a soft liquid warble that a March bluebird might envy."

Phenology Hike for Elder Explorers

This program is targeted for our older nature lovers. Participate monthly or register for one week at a time -- the choice is yours. Starting at 9 a.m. led by a Beaver Creek Reserve naturalist, the 30 - 45 minute hike on the Reserve trails will document the changes taking place in the woods surrounding Beaver Creek Reserve.
The hike will be capped off with coffee and a treat and a little more discussion about the changes and things we've seen. The program is geared for adults 55 and older.

Wire-Wrapped Rock Pendant Necklace
April 12 | 6:30 until 8:30 pm | Nature Center

Create a pendant using un-drilled polished stones, small beads and 20-gage wire. Using the basic skills involved in wire wrapping, we will take simple materials and turn them into a gorgeous pendant you can wear. We will also make a cotton cord necklace with a pounded wire clasp to hang your pendant.
Bring a favorite stone to wire wrap or there will be a selection of pretty stones for you to purchase to use in your pendant. You will leave this class with a pendant necklace and the skills to make another! This is an intermediate skill level class for ages 12 and older.

Citizen Science Extravaganza!

If you have ever been interested in becoming a citizen scientist but weren't sure what project you would like to work on, this is an event for you! The Citizen Science Center is holding a one-day event where you can learn about Grassland Bird Monitoring of the Lower Chippewa River, Mussel Monitoring of Eau Claire County Streams, Acoustic Bat Monitoring, Aquatic Invasive Species & Clean Boats Clean Waters, Wisconsin NatureMapping, and Water Action Volunteers.
Come for one or come for all the programs. You will receive all education materials necessary for projects. Lunch will be provided. Be prepared to be inside and outside. Bring binoculars and rubber boots if you have them.

Frog Fest

Frog Fest 2012 is an annual event not only at Beaver Creek but also throughout Wisconsin each spring as the ponds begin to thaw. The Wisconsin Frog Fest circuit hosts 11 frog performers and 1 toad. Join Reserve Naturalist Ruth Forsgren as she helps you to identify by sight and sound your local performers.
The evening will end with a hike down to Beaver Creek's own frog chorus marsh. Dress appropriately for cool evening weather and possible muddy terrain. A flashlight may also prove helpful.

Why Native Plants?

Join us to explore native plants. We'll discuss which native plants are available for our area, why they are an important alternative and how they can save resources. Find out how using native grasses and flowers in your landscape can provide habitat for wildlife.
Preview those plants which will be available in May at Beaver Creek Reserve's Native Plant Sale and get ideas for using those plants in your backyard. There will also be time to share ideas with other gardeners.

Family Adventures in Geocaching

Geocaching is a "treasure" hunting game where players search for hidden containers called caches, using GPS (global positioning system) units. This class is designed as an introduction to geocaching. Participants will learn basic GPS use and have a chance to practice their new skills during this class. Participants do not need a GPS unit. This program is geared for families with school-aged children. Everyone is welcome.

Spring Wildflower Walk

Join retired UW-Eau Claire botany professor Joe Rohrer and naturalists Mike Harden and Pam Rasmussen on a guided wildflower tour of Putnam Park. The ephemeral bloom is spectacular and your expert guides will share more information than you can comprehend. Bring a notebook, field guides and binoculars. We will meet at the footbridge behind Phillips Hall.

Celtic Knot Bracelet & Earrings Class

Create an intricate, link bracelet and earring set. Almost every component of these pieces we will be making from scratch using jewelry wire, beads and simple hand tools. This bracelet and earrings set resembles Celtic designs and is truly a work of art. This is an advanced-intermediate class and is recommended for ages 15 and up.

Grassland Bird Monitoring in the Lower Chippewa River Training

Grassland bird populations have been declining across the country. Learn how to identify grassland birds and take part in surveys to determine the species and abundance of birds that live along the Lower Chippewa River. This is a great opportunity to spend time "in the field" with other birders learning the local grassland birds.
Training will be held in Downsville at Simply Dunn. Directions to training location will be emailed closer to date. Wear clothes for outside, bring binoculars if you have them, and bring a bag dinner.
